How to check the amount of free RAM memory on Windows Cloud Servers

The memory (RAM) is one of the critical components in the server and it may slow down the server performance if the server memory is fully utilized. The amount of total memory allocated in a Windows Cloud server as well as the details of the used and free available memory can easily be found out using any of the below methods:


Using Task Manager


  1. Right-click on Start menu button and then click on Task Manager.

  2. Click on Performance tab and then on Memory option.

  3. The Memory option shows details such as Total memory, used memory and available memory.


    This option also shows two graphs related to the Memory in the server. The first graph shows the memory usage of the server and the second graph shows the memory composition.


    The Memory composition graph is further divided into three, namely:

    In Use - Memory used by processes, drivers, or the operating system.

    Standby - Memory that contains cached data and code that is not actively in use.

    Free - Memory that is not currently in use and that will be repurposed first when processes, drivers, or the operating system need more memory.


    These details can be found out by hovering the mouse pointer over each section of the Memory composition graph:

Using Resource Monitor


  1. Click on the Start menu and open the Run dialogue box. The Run window can also be accessed by clicking on Window button + R.

  2. Type in resmon in the Run dialogue box to open the Resource Monitor.

  3. Click on the Memory tab to see the detailed information about the RAM (memory) usage in the server. The different statistics provide the details regarding total memory, memory being used as well as the amount of free memory in the server.


    A breakdown of memory usage by the processes running in the server can also be viewed using the Resource Monitor:

Using Performance Monitor


  1. Click on the Start menu and open the Run dialogue box. The Run window can also be accessed by clicking on Window button + R.

  2. Type in perfmon in the Run dialogue box to open the Resource Monitor.

  3. Click on Performance Monitor under Performance option.

  4. Click on the green Plus (+) symbol to open up the Add Counters window.

  5. Select Memory from the field under Available Counters, then click on Add and then on OK in the Add Counters window.

  6. The graph pertaining to the memory usage in the server will now be displayed. The detail of any specific counter can also be viewed by clicking on the name of the counter.
